2013 Nature Encounters Day Camps

Fee: $20/each
Location: McCloud Nature Park

Ready to get your hands dirty and have fun learning about the natural world around you?  Our Kids Nature Camps are back!  These camps are designed for the young and curious, ages 8-12, who prefer a hands-on approach to learning.  The day camps, held on designated Thursdays from 9:00am to 1:00pm, will be supervised by our staff of naturalists who will work closely with kids to advance their knowledge of nature topics offered, while getting them outdoors to experience first-hand the wonders of the natural world and providing tons of fun for those eager to explore!  Kids will need to dress for the outdoors (old clothes are recommended!), and bring a well-marked sack lunch and water bottle.  Please add insect repellent and sunscreen for summer day camps.  Parents can drop off their kids as early as 8:30am.  Camps end at 1:00pm and Children must be picked up by 1:30pm!

Science

Insect Safari

June 6th: 9:00am - 1:00pm

June is buzzing with life at McCloud Nature Park!  Kids will learn the importance of insects in the ecosystem, their life cycles and role in the food chain.  Spend the day with our naturalists collecting, identifying, and learning about the benefits of bugs.  Then, at the end of the day, we will release them back into their native habitat.

Reptile Mania

June 27th: 9:00am - 1:00pm

Reptiles are not slimy and slippery!  McCloud Nature Park is home to many kinds of reptiles.  Learn about the different turtles and snakes native to Indiana, their roles in the environment, their life cycles, and the physical features that set them apart from other species.  Go on a hike to try to find some of our aquatic inhabitants as we explore their watery worlds in McCloud Nature Park!

Science

Young Anglers Fishing Camp

July 11th: 9:00am - 1:00pm

Oh crappie!  Cast away! These are just two of the games that teach young anglers about fishing.  We will add fun fish facts to the basics of fishing.  Kids will learn about fish biology, rod-rigging, knot-tying, and selecting tackle.  This hands-on camp will provide guidance in catch-and-release practices, safety around the water, and fishing ethics.  Wear water shoes and bring a change of clothes so you can enjoy cooling off in the Big Walnut Creek before heading home with your complimentary sport fishing identification guide and a bobber!

Archeology of the Park

July 25th: 9:00am - 1:00pm

Did you know Native Americans first lived on the land that is now McCloud Nature Park?  Delve deep into the cultural history of the park in this adventuresome day camp focused around an archaeological dig.  Be prepared to find evidence of past civilizations as we learn through Native American games and crafts, then set off on an exploration through woodland and prairie to look for traces of former residents!
