SUMMARY:POSTPONED - Guest Speaker Spotlight: Coffee and Conservation with Jessica Helmbold
DESCRIPTION:Photo credit: Amy Hodson\, used with permission. To view more of Amy’s beautiful photos\, follow Bubbly Birder on Facebook.\n***THIS PROGRAM HAS BEEN POSTPONED DUE TO PUBLIC HEALTH CONCERNS RELATING TO COVID-19 (CORONAVIRUS). IT WILL BE RESCHEDULED AT SOME POINT IN THE FUTURE.*** \n  \nJoin Amos Butler Audubon Society Education Chair and Indy Parks Naturalist\, Jessica Helmbold\, on a discovery of the history of coffee. As you gain a greater appreciation for one of your favorite beverages\, you should also think about how our consumption of this magical brew effects the environment. \nOne of the biggest threats to the environment\, and more specifically to rainforests\, is the clearing of land for the production of staple crops like bananas\, pineapples\, and coffee! Coffee is unique in that it can grow in harmony with the rainforest. But only if you demand it! You can vote with your dollars to support rainforest conservation through the kind of coffee you buy. \nThe Wood Thrush songbird pictured is just one of the many birds that overwinters in Central America and populations are declining\, partially due to shrinking winter habitat. \nAttendees will have an opportunity to sample different varieties of Rainforest Alliance/bird friendly coffees. \nRecommended for adults. \nFREE to attend\, no advance registration needed.

SUMMARY:Animal Tales: The Barn Owls
DESCRIPTION:Our Park Naturalists and volunteers come to your local library each month to share a story about a native animal and lead a craft or activity. These programs are FREE to attend and are most appropriate for preschool to upper elementary age children. Advance registration is required by contacting your library.  \nPlease note: With the ever-changing circumstances involving the COVID-19 pandemic\, Animal Tales may become Virtual Animal Tales and/or an Animal Tales StoryWalk at McCloud Nature Park during any given month. Follow us on Facebook or contact your local library for updates. \nSeptember: The Busy Little Squirrel by Nancy Tafuri \nThe leaves have started to fall. The air is cold. Squirrel needs to get ready for winter. He cannot nibble with the mice. He does not have time to hop with the frogs or run with the dogs. Will this busy little squirrel ever slow down? Focusing on all the charming features of the fall season\, this sweetly illustrated story features country animals\, pumpkins\, leaves\, apples and other signs of autumn. \nOctober: Can You Do This\, Old Badger? by Eve Bunting \nThere are lots of things Little Badger can do that Old Badger can’t manage to do very well anymore. But Old Badger can still show Little Badger a few tricks to teach him how to become a badger extraordinaire – like how to catch fish\, where to find worms\, and how to get to the honey before the bees get to you. Old badgers are supposed to teach little badgers\, he says. It’s all part of the plan — and so is nap time! \nNovember: Time for Bed\, Little One by Caroline Pitcher \nLittle Fox doesn’t want to go to bed. He’s not tired yet! But morning is breaking and his friends are either eating breakfast or getting ready for bed. Finally\, Little Fox finds Squirrel and the two friends chase each other through the woods. But soon\, Little Fox is getting sleepy. Maybe it is time for Little Fox to get ready for bed after all. \nDecember: The Barn Owls by Tony Johnston \nTony Johnston’s The Barn Owls recalls in quiet tones the memory of a barn that has stood alone in a wheat field for one hundred years at least. The owls have nested there and have hunted in the fields and circled in the night skies as time slowly slipped by. Every night as the moon rises\, a barn owl awakens and flies out to hunt. \nClayton – Liberty Township  \n\nCall library at (317) 539-2991 to register in advance\nTuesdays at 10:30 a.m. \nSept. 7\, Oct. 5\, Nov. 2\, Dec. 7\n\nMonrovia  \n\nCall library at (317) 996-4307 to register in advance\nTuesdays at 1 p.m. \nSept. 7\, Oct. 5\, Nov. 2\, Dec. 7\n\nPlainfield – Guilford Township  \n\nCall library at (317) 839-6602 to register in advance\nWednesdays at 10 a.m. \nSept. 8\, Oct. 6\, Nov. 3\, Dec. 8\n\nBrownsburg  \n\nCall library at (317) 852-3167 to register in advance\nWednesdays at 4 p.m. \nSept. 8\, Oct. 6\, Nov. 3\, Dec. 8\n\nJamestown \n\nCall library at (765) 676-6190 to register in advance\nThursdays at 3 p.m.\nSept. 9\, Oct. 7\, Nov. 4\, Dec. 9\n\nRoachdale \n\nCall library at (765) 522-1491 to register in advance\nThursdays at 4:30 p.m.\nSept. 9\, Oct. 7\, Nov. 4\, Dec. 9\n\nAvon \n\nCall library at (317) 272-4818 to register in advance\nFridays at 2 p.m.\nSept. 10\, Oct. 8\, Nov. 5\, Dec. 10\n\nDanville \n\nCall library at (317) 745-2604 to register in advance\nFridays at 4 p.m.\nSept. 10\, Oct. 8\, Nov. 5\, Dec. 10

One by one\, woodland animals find it and crawl in; first\, a curious mole\, then a rabbit\, a badger and others\, each one larger than the last. Finally\, a big brown bear is followed in by a tiny brown mouse and what happens next makes for a wonderfully funny climax.  \nFebruary: City Hawk by Meghan McCarthy \nNew York City is known for its skyscrapers\, subways\, and hustle and bustle — not for its wildlife. So everyone is surprised when a red-tailed hawk is spotted flying over Fifth Avenue\, and even more surprised when he decides to settle down on the ledge of one of the Big Apple’s swankiest apartment buildings. The hawk soon draws many admirers. They name him Pale Male and watch as he builds his nest\, finds a mate\, and teaches his little hawk babies to fly. Based on a true story.  \nMarch: The Windy Day  by Anna Milbourne and Elena Temporin  \nJoin children as they play outdoors and discover the delights of a windy day\, from flying a kite high in the sky to watching seagulls gliding in the wind. With simple text and gorgeous illustrations from Elena Temporin throughout.   \nApril: A Salamander’s Life  by John Himmelman   \nJohn Himmelman’s color illustrations and simple text relate the life cycle of a salamander as it grows from being an egg to a larva to an adult female salamander which hunts for food and lays her own eggs. Strikingly original watercolors depict the salamander’s world from her unique perspective.   \nClayton – Liberty Township  \n\nCall library at (317) 539-2991 to register in advance\nTuesdays at 10:30 a.m. \nJan. 4\, Feb. 1\, March 1\, April 5\n\nMonrovia  \n\nCall library at (317) 996-4307 to register in advance\nTuesdays at 1 p.m. \nJan. 4\, Feb. 1\, March 1\, April 5\n\nPlainfield – Guilford Township  \n\nCall library at (317) 839-6602 to register in advance\nWednesdays at 10 a.m. \nJan. 5\, Feb. 2\, March 2\, April 6\n\nBrownsburg  \n\nCall library at (317) 852-3167 to register in advance\nWednesdays at 4 p.m. \nJan. 5\, Feb. 2\, March 2\, April 6\n\nJamestown \n\nCall library at (765) 676-6190 to register in advance\nThursdays at 3 p.m.\nJan. 6\, Feb. 3\, March 3\, April 7\n\nRoachdale \n\nCall library at (765) 522-1491 to register in advance\nThursdays at 4:30 p.m.\nApril 7\n\nAvon \n\nCall library at (317) 272-4818 to register in advance\nFridays at 2 p.m.\nJan. 7\, Feb. 4\, March 4\, April 8\n\nDanville \n\nCall library at (317) 745-2604 to register in advance\nFridays at 4 p.m.\nJan. 7\, Feb. 4\, March 4\, April 8

Will the turtle survive this dangerous journey? \nJune – Opossum at Sycamore Road \nIt’s nighttime. Opossum and her four babies waddle across a backyard\, rummaging through trash cans for food. Suddenly a dog pops out of nowhere! Will Opossum be able to protect her young? Opossum at Sycamore Road is a fun and informative story with beautifully detailed illustrations.  \nJuly – The Very Quiet Cricket \nA tiny cricket makes his way into the world\, meeting one insect after another\, each of whom greets the little cricket with a cheery hello.
