SUMMARY:McCloud Prairie Maze Open
DESCRIPTION:Come out to McCloud Nature Park during the months of September and October for the 2023 McCloud Prairie Maze and celebrate one of the cutest and most interesting members of the rodent family: the squirrel! \nBecause their teeth never quit growing\, squirrels must constantly chew on things to prevent their teeth from growing too long. Usually\, they gnaw on tree branches\, but if you look closely at the wheel stops in the parking lot near Paw Paw Pathway\, you’ll see that they’ll chew on just about anything. \nThere are three main types of squirrels: ground\, tree\, and flying squirrels. The most common type that most of us are familiar with is the tree squirrel. Here in Indiana\, tree squirrels include the grey squirrel\, the red squirrel\, and one of the most common types spotted in McCloud Nature Park\, the fox squirrel. \nWant to learn more about squirrels? Stop in at our Nature Center and ask our naturalists about these fascinating animals. If you’re really lucky\, Assistant Park Naturalist Joe Lembo will be who you talk to because he is especially nutty about squirrels! (Ask him to tell you why some squirrels glow pink under ultraviolet light!) \nCelebrate squirrels this fall with a trip through our squirrel-themed prairie maze. Be sure to dress for the weather\, wear comfortable closed-toe shoes\, and bring some water. Bring the kits\, too\, as this maze is appropriate for all ages! \nMake sure to explore the McCloud Prairie Maze by October 31 and then see how many squirrels you can find in the park afterwards! \nAdmission to McCloud Nature Park and the prairie maze is absolutely FREE\, and both are open from dawn to dusk daily. To access the prairie maze\, park in the Nature Center parking lot. Maps to the maze are available in the kiosk outside of the Nature Center\, as well as in the kiosk at the entrance to the maze.

SUMMARY:Senior Center: Beavers
DESCRIPTION:Hendricks County Parks & Recreation is teaming up with Hendricks County Senior Services to bring FREE programs to the Senior Center in Danville! \nJoin our naturalists at the Senior Center in Danville on the 4th Wednesday of every month from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. for a FREE nature-themed program! \nThese programs take place during lunch at the Senior Center\, and donations are accepted for lunch. The Senior Center partners with the Central Indiana Council on Aging (CICOA) to provide the meals. CICOA’s paperwork must be completed upon your first visit. Lunch is prepared by Hendricks Regional Health Hospital. To make a lunch reservation\, please call (317) 910-5356 by 11 a.m. on the day before the program. \nWednesday\, Jan. 25 – Beavers \nBeavers are amazing engineers! Their adaptations help them complete their jobs most effectively. On land\, a beaver’s movements are extremely awkward\, making them vulnerable to predators. In water\, however\, beavers can swim up to 6 mph and they stay underwater for up to 15 minutes\, all which help beavers evade terrestrial predators. A naturalist will bring props to showcase this fascinating animal.

DESCRIPTION:Our Park Naturalists and volunteers come to your local library each month to share a story about a native animal and lead a craft or activity. These programs are FREE to attend and are most appropriate for preschool to upper elementary age children. Advance registration is required by contacting your library.   \nOctober: Bats in the Library by Brian Lies  \nThe enchantment of story time is near—come bats\, come one and all\, and gather around for the tale of the night. Roam the book-filled halls on this inky evening as the bats wander around the library and cause all sorts of mischief. Brian Lies’ joyful critters and their nocturnal celebration cast library visits in a new light. Even the youngest of readers will want to join the batty book-fest.  \nNovember: Wild Birds by Joanne Ryder  \nStarlings line telephone wires against a salmon sky at dawn as a red-winged blackbird squawks at a nervous cat. An unnamed girl with a birdwatching hobby silently witnesses the activity of her feathered friends\, from robins and jays to sparrows and geese. This colorful tribute should take wing with budding ornithologists and nature lovers alike.  \nDecember: The Reason for a Flower by Ruth Heller  \nDiscover the amazing world of seeds and pollination with The Reason for a Flower. Featuring bright illustrations and a simple text\, each page walks you through the journey of a seed and explains the important parts of a flower\, of germination\, of food-based plants\, and more! The reason for a flower is to manufacture seeds\, but Ruth Heller shares a lot more about parts of plants and their functions in her trademark rhythmic style. \nClayton – Liberty Township   \n\nCall library at (317) 539-2991 to register in advance \nTuesdays at 10:30 a.m.  \nSept. 6\, Oct. 4\, Nov. 1\, Dec. 6 \n\nMonrovia   \n\nCall library at (317) 996-4307 to register in advance  \nTuesdays at 1 p.m.  \nSept. 6\, Oct. 4\, Nov. 1\, Dec. 6 \n\nBrownsburg   \n\nCall library at (317) 852-3167 to register in advance  \nWednesdays at 4 p.m.  \nSept. 7\, Oct. 5\, Nov. 2\, Dec. 7 \n\nJamestown  \n\nCall library at (765) 676-6190 to register in advance  \nThursdays at 3 p.m. \nSept. 8\, Oct. 6\, Nov. 3\, Dec. 8 \n\nAvon  \n\nCall library at (317) 272-4818 to register in advance  \nFridays at 2 p.m. \nSept. 9\, Oct. 7\, Nov. 4\, Dec. 9 \n\nDanville  \n\nCall library at (317) 745-2604 to register in advance  \nFridays at 4 p.m. \nSept. 9\, Oct. 7\, Nov. 4\, Dec. 9

SUMMARY:Animal Tales: Opossum at Sycamore Road
DESCRIPTION:Our Park Naturalists and volunteers come to your local library each month to share a story about a native animal and lead a craft or activity. These programs are FREE to attend and are most appropriate for preschool to upper elementary age children. Advance registration is required by contacting your library.  \nMay – A Turtle’s Dangerous Journey \nA turtle is making her way across a highway to find a nesting spot. She avoids being run over\, only to find trash in the nesting grounds\, which attracts predators to her eggs. Will the turtle survive this dangerous journey? \nJune – Opossum at Sycamore Road \nIt’s nighttime. Opossum and her four babies waddle across a backyard\, rummaging through trash cans for food. Suddenly a dog pops out of nowhere! Will Opossum be able to protect her young? Opossum at Sycamore Road is a fun and informative story with beautifully detailed illustrations.  \nJuly – The Very Quiet Cricket \nA tiny cricket makes his way into the world\, meeting one insect after another\, each of whom greets the little cricket with a cheery hello. The cricket rubs his wings together each time\, but nothing happens\, not a sound. Until the day he meets another cricket – a female – and something different happens. \nAugust – It’s a Hummingbird’s Life \nZooming in on a year in the life of a hummingbird\, this story gives young bird lovers a close look into this tiny bird’s busy days\, season by season. The text undulates across the pages like the bird in flight\, offering details about hummingbirds that children can digest easily. \nClayton – Liberty Township  \n\nCall library at (317) 539-2991 to register in advance\nTuesdays at 10:30 a.m. \nMay 3\, June 7\, July 5\, Aug. 2\n\nMonrovia  \n\nCall library at (317) 996-4307 to register in advance\nTuesdays at 1 p.m. \nMay 3\, June 7\, July 5\, Aug. 2\n\nPlainfield – Guilford Township  \n\nCall library at (317) 839-6602 to register in advance\nWednesdays at 10 a.m. \nMay 4\, June 8\, July 6\, Aug. 3\n\nBrownsburg  \n\nCall library at (317) 852-3167 to register in advance\nWednesdays at 4 p.m. \nMay 4\, June 8\, July 6\, Aug. 3\n\nJamestown \n\nCall library at (765) 676-6190 to register in advance\nThursdays at 3 p.m.\nMay 5\, June 9\, July 7\, Aug. 4\n\nRoachdale \n\nCall library at (765) 522-1491 to register in advance\nThursdays at 4:30 p.m.\nMay 5\, June 9\, July 7\, Aug. 4\n\nAvon \n\nCall library at (317) 272-4818 to register in advance\nFridays at 2 p.m.\nMay 6\, June 10\, July 8\, Aug. 5\n\nDanville \n\nCall library at (317) 745-2604 to register in advance\nFridays at 4 p.m.\nMay 6\, June 10\, July 8\, Aug. 5
