SUMMARY:Water Quality at the Senior Center
DESCRIPTION:Hendricks County Parks & Recreation is teaming up with Hendricks County Senior Services to bring FREE programs to the Senior Center in Danville! \nJoin our naturalists at the Senior Center in Danville on the 4th Wednesday of every month from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. for a FREE nature-themed program! \nThese programs take place during lunch at the Senior Center\, and donations are accepted for lunch. The Senior Center partners with the Central Indiana Council on Aging (CICOA) to provide the meals. CICOA’s paperwork must be completed upon your first visit. Lunch is prepared by Hendricks Regional Health Hospital. To make a lunch reservation\, please call (317) 910-5356 by 11 a.m. on the day before the program. \nWednesday\, July 26 – Water Quality \nHealthy streams are important for wildlife and for recreation. Did you know that the types of bugs that live in the creek can tell you a lot about water quality? The presence or absence of certain aquatic insects can give you an idea about health of the stream. Fish aren’t very good indicators because they can swim to different areas if there is a water pollution problem. Learn about the relationship between good water quality and the aquatic bugs that live in our streams with a Hendricks County Park naturalist.

SUMMARY:Animal Tales: Lousy Rotten Stinkin' Grapes
DESCRIPTION:Our Park Naturalists and volunteers come to your local library each month to share a story about a native animal and lead a craft or activity. These programs are FREE to attend and are most appropriate for preschool to upper elementary age children. Advance registration is required by contacting your library.   \n \nJuly: Lousy Rotten Stinkin’ Grapes by Margie Palatini \nIn Palatini’s humorous take on Aesop’s “The Fox and the Grapes\,” Fox enlists Bear\, Beaver\, Porcupine\, and Possum to help grab some out-of-reach fruit. Concocting an elaborate scheme\, Fox ignores the other animals’ simpler\, sounder solutions. Moser’s considered watercolors humorously show realistic-looking creatures displaying human responses\, from calculating to exasperated. \nClayton – Liberty Township   \n\nCall library at (317) 539-2991 to register in advance \nTuesdays at 10:30 a.m.  \nJune 6\, Aug. 1\n\nMonrovia   \n\nCall library at (317) 996-4307 to register in advance  \nTuesdays at 1 p.m.  \nJune 6\, Aug. 1\n\nBrownsburg   \n\nCall library at (317) 852-3167 to register in advance  \nWednesdays at 4 p.m.  \nMay 3\, June 7\, July 5\, Aug. 2\n\nJamestown  \n\nCall library at (765) 676-6190 to register in advance  \nThursdays at 3 p.m. \nMay 4\, June 8\, July 6\, Aug. 3\n\nRoachdale \n\nCall library at (765) 522-1491 to register in advance  \nThursdays at 4 p.m. \nJune 8\, July 6\, Aug. 3\n\nAvon  \n\nCall library at (317) 272-4818 to register in advance  \nFridays at 2 p.m. \nMay 5\, June 9\, July 7\, Aug. 4\n\nDanville  \n\nCall library at (317) 745-2604 to register in advance  \nFridays at 4 p.m. \nMay 5\, June 9\, July 7\, Aug. 4

SUMMARY:What Does the Bird Say?
DESCRIPTION:You can’t see the bird\, but you can hear it. Maybe birds are just beginning to pique your interest\, and “birding” sounds too scientific for you. Join a naturalist and Roger Hedge\, retired Indiana DNR ecologist\, for a gateway into learning about birds: mnemonics.  Say what?! “Nuh·maa·nuhks.” Bird mnemonics are the memory phrases that many birders use to help them remember the songs of different bird species. We’ll learn about bird communication\, bird sounds\, resources for learning bird songs\, practice identifying birds at the park through listening\, and…learn some bird mnemonics to introduce you to our backyard neighbors. Meet at Firefly Shelter. \nHiking terrain info: easy level of difficulty; gravel and natural surfaces; up to ½ mile \nRECOMMENDED FOR AGES 8 THROUGH ADULT \nFREE TO ATTEND \nNO ADVANCE REGISTRATION REQUIRED \nAPPROXIMATE PROGRAM DURATION: 1 HOUR
