SUMMARY:Maple Syrup Days
DESCRIPTION:Come share in a true farm-to-table experience. Every year the sugar maple trees at McCloud Nature Park produce sap with a high sugar content. We tap these trees by boring holes in their trunks and when daytime temperatures increase\, sap runs into the attached buckets. Staff and volunteers collect the sap daily\, which is then placed in an evaporator where it is reduced into the delicious maple syrup. It’s an amazing process that visitors can witness and participate in first-hand! \nOur 10th Annual Maple Syrup Days will take place on March 7 and 14\, 2020 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day. \nThis event is FREE to attend\, appropriate for all ages\, and no advance registration is required. \nThe station presentations begin every 20 minutes\, guided hikes are offered approximately every 30 minutes\, and there is an on-going scavenger hunt and maple syrup story walk. Please allow at least 1 hour to enjoy the festival. \nThe popular Pancake Breakfast Fundraiser organized by the Parks Foundation of Hendricks County is concurrent to the festival. Be sure to reserve your spots at the table! Click here for more information. \nWeather hotline: (317) 718-6111 \nFor more information\, visit: https://hendrickscountyparks.org/programs/maple-syrup-days/

SUMMARY:POSTPONED - Guest Speaker Spotlight: Coffee and Conservation with Jessica Helmbold
DESCRIPTION:Photo credit: Amy Hodson\, used with permission. To view more of Amy’s beautiful photos\, follow Bubbly Birder on Facebook.\n***THIS PROGRAM HAS BEEN POSTPONED DUE TO PUBLIC HEALTH CONCERNS RELATING TO COVID-19 (CORONAVIRUS). IT WILL BE RESCHEDULED AT SOME POINT IN THE FUTURE.*** \n  \nJoin Amos Butler Audubon Society Education Chair and Indy Parks Naturalist\, Jessica Helmbold\, on a discovery of the history of coffee. As you gain a greater appreciation for one of your favorite beverages\, you should also think about how our consumption of this magical brew effects the environment. \nOne of the biggest threats to the environment\, and more specifically to rainforests\, is the clearing of land for the production of staple crops like bananas\, pineapples\, and coffee! Coffee is unique in that it can grow in harmony with the rainforest. But only if you demand it! You can vote with your dollars to support rainforest conservation through the kind of coffee you buy. \nThe Wood Thrush songbird pictured is just one of the many birds that overwinters in Central America and populations are declining\, partially due to shrinking winter habitat. \nAttendees will have an opportunity to sample different varieties of Rainforest Alliance/bird friendly coffees. \nRecommended for adults. \nFREE to attend\, no advance registration needed.
