SUMMARY:Virtual Animal Tales: The Moon Saw It All
DESCRIPTION:Normally our park naturalists come to your local library each month to share a story about a native animal and a related craft or activity with preschool through upper elementary age children. This program is FREE to attend.\n \nThese resources are available at any time\, since this is not a live program.\n \nCheck our Facebook page as the first full week of the month approaches for a Facebook event regarding this month’s Virtual Animal Tales program. In the Discussion tab of the Event\, you will find a variety of resources relating to this month’s story.\n \nIn April\, we were going to read this book in-person: The Moon Saw It All by Nancy L. Young. This book is available at many local libraries\, and some even have this available in a digital format.\n \nSummary:\nEver wonder what animals do after dark? They dance the night away at a critter ball thrown for one and all! Children revel in a dreamy moonlit world where bobcats sing soulful songs\, javelina click hooves on tortoise shell roofs\, and coatimundis drum right along at a critter ball thrown for one and all.\n \nTo view the entire Animal Tales schedule\, click here.

SUMMARY:Animal Tales: Step Gently Out
DESCRIPTION:Our Park Naturalists and volunteers come to your local library each month to share a story about a native animal and lead a craft or activity. These programs are FREE to attend and are most appropriate for preschool to upper elementary age children. Advance registration is required by contacting your library.  \nPlease note: With the ever-changing circumstances involving the COVID-19 pandemic\, Animal Tales may become Virtual Animal Tales and/or an Animal Tales StoryWalk at McCloud Nature Park during any given month. Follow us on Facebook or contact your local library for updates. \nMay: Step Gently Out by Helen Frost \nWhat would happen if you walked very\, very quietly and looked ever so carefully at the natural world outside? You might see a cricket leap\, a moth spread her wings\, or a spider step across a silken web. In simple\, evocative language\, Helen Frost offers a hint at the many tiny creatures around us. \nJune: Fireflies! by Julie Brinckloe \nA young boy is proud of having caught a jar full of fireflies\, which seems to him like owning a piece of moonlight\, but as the light begins to dim he realizes he must set the insects free or they will die. \nJuly: How to Hide a Butterfly by Ruth Heller \nGo on a fascinating nature hunt to find the butterflies\, bees\, inchworms\, and other intriguing insects hiding in the brilliantly-painted pages of this book. \nAugust: Flight of the Honeybee by Raymond Huber \nA tiny honeybee emerges from the hive for the first time. Using sunlight\, landmarks\, and scents to remember the path\, she goes in search of pollen and nectar to share with the thousands of other bees in her hive. She uses her powerful sense of smell to locate the flowers that sustain her\, avoids birds that might eat her\, and returns home to share her finds with her many sisters.  \nPlainfield – Guilford Township  \n\nCall library at (317) 839-6602 to register in advance\nMondays at 4:30 p.m. \nMay 3\, June 7\, August 2\n\nClayton – Liberty Township  \n\nCall library at (317) 539-2991 to register in advance\nTuesdays at 10:30 a.m. \nMay 4\, June 8\, July 6\, August 3\n\nMonrovia  \n\nCall library at (317) 996-4307 to register in advance\nTuesdays at 1 p.m. \nMay 4\, June 8\, July 6\, August 3\n\nBrownsburg  \n\nCall library at (317) 852-3167 to register in advance\nWednesdays at 4 p.m. \nMay 5\, June 9\, July 7\, August 4\n\nJamestown \n\nCall library at (765) 676-6190 to register in advance\nThursdays at 3 p.m.\nMay 6\, June 10\, July 8\, August 5\n\nRoachdale \n\nCall library at (765) 522-1491 to register in advance\nThursdays at 4:30 p.m.\nMay 6\, June 10\, July 8\, August 5\n\nAvon \n\nCall library at (317) 272-4818 to register in advance\nFridays at 2 p.m.\nMay 7\, June 11\, July 9\, August 6\n\nDanville \n\nCall library at (317) 745-2604 to register in advance\nFridays at 4 p.m.\nMay 7\, June 11\, July 9\, August 6

SUMMARY:Nature Play Day: Hands-Off Letterboxing
DESCRIPTION:Join Us for Nature Play Days in June! \nFrom June 5-13\, 2021\, the Indiana Children and Nature Network is encouraging families across the state to make a special effort to get kids outside by holding Nature Play Day events. These mostly free events range from nature games\, picnics\, creek stomps\, and kite-flying. The goal of Nature Play Days is to get kids outside and remind families that nature play is important and can happen close to home. To find a Nature Play Day near you\, visit www.IndianaChildrenandNature.org. \nDue to COVID-19\, we will not be issuing Nature Play Days passports this year. \nChildren under the age of 16 must attend with a parent or guardian\, as these are not drop-off programs. For any weather-related concerns\, please call our Weather Hotline at (317) 718-6111. \n\nThis Nature Play Days program may be hands-off\, but it’s not hands-free! You’ll need a riddle sheet and pencil from the McCloud Nature Center to help you find the way to animal signs hidden on our trails. Usually\, letterboxing involves stamps and ink pads\, but this hands-off version means that you can draw the animal or write its name to prove that you found the letterbox. Find them all and win a small prize! \nHiking terrain info: easy to moderate difficulty\, natural surfaces\, up to 2 miles. \nRECOMMENDED FOR AGES 7 THROUGH ADULT. \nFREE TO ATTEND. \nNO ADVANCE REGISTRATION REQUIRED. \nAPPROXIMATE PROGRAM DURATION: 2 HOURS (ONGOING).

SUMMARY:Animal Tales: Fireflies!
