ACORN

Teens, could parks and recreation be a career option for you? Our Active Council on Recreation Needs (ACORN) program is designed to provide a no-pressure look into parks and recreation careers for teenagers who are contemplating their futures after high school. Register for any or all of the programs that interest you!

Saturday, Jan. 8, 10 a.m.: Planning for Multiple Uses of Parks

HCP&R Main Office, 955 E. Main Street, Danville 

Join Hendricks County Parks & Recreation staff as we explore what it’s like to work in a park office, different careers within the parks system, recommended education levels, and what it takes to be a parks superintendent. We also discuss how important multiple uses are in the park system.  


Saturday, Feb. 12, 10 a.m.: Protecting Nature

McCloud Nature Park 

Can you hunt any kind of animal you want at any time and anywhere with any kind of weapon? Can you keep as many fish as you can catch? Can you dump motor oil into a culvert to get rid of it? Join us as we learn about the laws designed to protect nature and the people who enforce those laws.

Saturday, April 9, 10 a.m.:  How to Build a Park

McCloud Nature Park 

Building a park is a complex but rewarding challenge. Learn about what went into building McCloud Nature Park, Sodalis Nature Park, and W.S. Gibbs Memorial Park from members of our maintenance crew. You might think that our maintenance crew simply mows grass all day, but that couldn’t be further from the truth! You’ll discover a wide range of skills, backgrounds, and talents that our crew possesses to both build and maintain a park. Then put your construction hats on because you will be designing your own park!
