It is monarch migration time! Help the naturalists contribute to citizen science by catching monarch butterflies in the park! We’ll “tag” those monarchs with butterfly-safe stickers with unique numbers. If these butterflies make it to Mexico, then we’ll receive notifications! This is part of Monarch Watch.
Families will walk trails on their own after receiving directions from the naturalists at the McCloud Nature Center. Monarch butterflies are delicate and must be handled with care. Once monarchs are caught, families will bring them carefully to the Nature Center so that the butterfly can be tagged and released immediately.
Monarch tagging will take place when the Nature Center is open (Wednesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m.) and when the weather conditions are appropriate (warm, sunny, and only light wind). Families can bring their own butterfly nets to participate or borrow one of ours.
APPROPRIATE FOR ALL AGES; CHILDREN UNDER THE AGE OF 16 MUST ATTEND WITH A PARENT OR GUARDIAN WHO IS ABLE TO WALK THE TRAILS.
